The guy who runs the site gave a talk a while back about how crazy cheap it is to host it, and why cloud vendors like Amazon and Google are making suckers out of people. "High Volume, Bandwidth Heavy Infrastructure On The Cheap" [this video] And I'm pretty sure he's also cryptocoin-rich, anyway.

I agree with charging the "appropriate amount", but that's not what AWS and the other hosting providers are offering though. They are offering you a price that is vastly different than what it actually costs. Instead hosts like Hetzner and OVH uses a price closer to the true cost for bandwidth for their users. Take a look at their dedicated hosting and the pricing. I'm not sponsored by either, but I am a happy user of Hetzner. Check out this talk by Kyle Drake that goes more into the details of bandwidth costs: [this video]

Neocities [0] does all of this! - It's free (though you can become a supporter and get some extra benefits) [1] - It's fast, since it uses it's own CDN. [2] - It's secure, all pages support SSL, even with custom domains. [3] - It has a command line tool [4] that can be wrapped to automate upload of pages, or used in a Git hook. - It has a plethora of learning resources [5].
