R and OpenNLP for Natural Language Processing NLP - Part 2
Why Stack Overflow recommends it
Stack Overflow users cite it as the tutorial they followed when trying to get named entity recognition working with openNLP in R, usually while asking why the approach now returns empty results.

What it is
Part 2 of a short tutorial series by Melvin L on using the Apache OpenNLP library from R. It demonstrates entity extraction and named entity recognition, alongside basic tasks like sentence, word and part-of-speech tokenizing, as a getting-started coding walkthrough.

I am following this article [LINK] to create a Named Entity Extractor. Like required, I have installed all the openNLP , NLP , rJava , magrittr and openNLPmodels.en packages. All has gone to plan except when using this function annotations .: # Extract entities from an AnnotatedPlainTextDocument entities <- function(doc, kind) { s <- doc$content a <- annotations(doc)[[1]] #Point of error if(hasArg(kind)) { k <- sapply(a$features, `[[`, "kind") s[a[k == kind]] } else { s[a[a$type == "entity"]] } } by using this: entities(text_doc, kind = "person") . The thing is even the intellisense in RStudio does not seem to know any function annotations . It show annotation , annotate and annotations_in_s

I have looked at this guide [LINK] and this youtube video [this video] which both use the same method. When I try and replicate the results from the biography example in the first link, all I get as the output of entities(bio_doc, kind = "person") is character(0) This was the same result when I used a different input string as well. I saw this thread Efficient Named Entity Recognition in R [LINK] and they got the same result as well (character(0)). I see that it went unanswered, so I was wondering if perhaps someone now has an answer to it? Has this method just been deprecated? I would very much appreciate anyone's insight.

I've been experimenting with text minning/NLP/preprocessing in R. I've been trying to get NEE/NER to work on a simple piece of text. Here's the text "Hocutt sells evidence-based ethics. It is strong medicine for an audience that prefers the old type, based on intuition, personal sensitivity, and a deep feeling for just what the right prescriptions must be. An audience that might paraphrase Hume, and deny the utility of evidence by intoning "No oughts from is's;" any more and your arguments will be dismissed as another naturalistic fallacy. Hume noted the ubiquitous segues from is's to oughts found in every moral disquisition that were made absent explanation: but "'tis necessary. . .that a r
