For WiX it was very hard for me to find a really useful written article. The best introduction (with proper project harvesting) for me is this video: [this video]

What worked for me best, was this fantastic tutorial video: [this video] Its best selling points for me was independent of visual studio version it describes deploying a .NET (Core) app also it focuses on what an average app's installer should be capable of (including heat, icon, background image and banner) you don't have to learn another layer on wix it gives you good practices on easy package generation and future maintenance it gives an installer project template which you can reuse: [LINK]

First concentrate on creating well working msi installer for ASP.NET application only - point 4 - and perhaps just use self hosting app. This would significantly simplify deployment as one of he prerequisites (.NET Core) does not have to be bootstrapped - you remove point 1 of todo list. I understand that at this point you should be capable to install you ASP.NET app into IIS. I solved this by creating an msi using Wix. I watched this Video [this video] and followed its instruction. For creating windows service I used NSSM, I copied nssm.exe as a part of installer. used the following command: nssm install service-name For creating service automatically I used the CustomAction of WiX.

Was able to complete the process with the Wix toolset recommendation. thx for the comments pointing me to a good tool. The documentation is a bit much for a biginner. Found a good tutorial however on youtube. He goes through very detailed explanation and does it from scratch. Though I'd share incase anyone else runs into this question. I have been referencing the following tutorial [this video] for creating a Setup Project for WiX v3, however, most WiX tutorials on the internet are targeting a C# application as its base project. I am currently building a Visual C++17 Win32 application that I want to deploy (i.e. create a setup *.msi installer) using WiX, given how powerful WiX is. Unfortunately, adding a reference to my C++ project yields a yellow bang exclamation point: [LINK] Moreover, when trying to reference an icon file, for example, in the Product.wxs file using $(var.TimeTrack.ProjectDir)\TimeTrack.ico reports that it is an " undefined predecessor variable ." Sorry. Just got back from vacation. One other question. I am selecting your answer as correct but I am going to go the Wix route unless you think your idea is better. Is there a reason your way is better than using the Wix Toolset? I was looking at this tutorial... [this video]
