Why Stack Overflow recommends it

Stack Overflow users link it when answering questions about using OpenGL inside Qt 5 apps, especially mixing custom GL rendering with QtQuick 2/QML or choosing Qt's OpenGL classes.

Recommended by 1 people across 4 different months, 2012 to 2016.

What it is

A one-hour conference talk from Qt Developer Days Berlin 2012 by Dr. Sean Harmer of KDAB. It tours Qt 5's OpenGL support, from the QPA/Lighthouse abstraction and the new OpenGL classes to QtQuick 2 and Qt3D, with examples of how to use it in different scenarios.

@sharethis - Actually Qt offers a neat abstraction to provide portable C++ API to create and use OpenGL contexts. That alone may be enough to justify using Qt, and then there is the rest of the framework... Take a look at this presentation: [this video]

@tirth - there is nothing wrong with borrowing the context. You can do custom GL painting both "under" and "over" QtQuick, go to youtube and watch this video on QML and GL integration: [this video]

You should watch the Qt dev talk on QML and OpenGL integration on youtube, it covers exactly custom OpenGL drawing with QML on top of it. [this video] 30 minutes in

@BlueSpud - since you are using a Qt window, might as well drop SDL as a dependency as datenwolf suggested, the stuff SDL does you already have in Qt, you will remove redundancies. Also, this video might help you out with embedding third party opengl rendering with Qt: [this video]

Cites Maiss · 2012-12 · Stack Overflow · on “Qt 4.x/5.x and OpenGL for Desktop Gui application: What module to choose?”

I am starting a new GUI application project using Qt and OpenGL for Linux/Windows desktops. My assumptions so far: use Qt GUI (C++ ... not QML/QtQuick 2) with OpenGL 4.1 or higher (requirement). After some reading, I am completely lost about what path to choose. What path will keep my application future-proof in term of support and libraries. Qt 4.x or Qt 5.x? Standard OpenGL or QGL or QOpenGL or QtOpenGL wrappers? QWidget/QGLWidget (Qt 4.x) or QWindow (Qt 5.x)? The application is intended to run in desktop environment and will do a lot of file (geometry) opening/saving, instanced 3D painting and some imaging. Could someone point me out to the best combination to choose with some explanation

I want to use Qt Quick 2.x for my program but I can't make it work with OpenGL > 2.0 I have main.qml : /* imports */ Window { ... Scene { ... } ... } In Scene I'm using OpenGL > 2.0 so my shaders aren't working. I've tried to add this line qobject_cast<QQuickWindow*>(engine.rootObjects().first())->setFormat(format_3_3); in main.cpp but that didn't help. int main(int argc, char *argv[]) { QGuiApplication app(argc, argv); QSurfaceFormat format_3_3; format_3_3.setMajorVersion(3); format_3_3.setMinorVersion(3); format_3_3.setProfile(QSurfaceFormat::CompatibilityProfile); qmlRegisterType<Scene>("SceneGL", 1, 0, "Scene"); QQmlApplicationEngine engine; engine.load(QUrl(QStringLiteral("qrc:/main.qml

I am currently implementing a QML application for a touch device with openGL rendering in the background. I used this talk [this video] as a base for my work. In short, I am using a custom QQuickView and set the option "clearbeforerendering" to false to be able to draw my openGL content. In addition to that, I want to receive touchEvents in my custom QQuickView to modify my openGL rendering in real time. Unfornately, touchEvent is never triggered, while I receive correctly the different mouseEvents. I tried this code on a QOPenGLWindow and received the touchEvents correctly, so the problem doesn't come from my device. Here are some part of my code which could be of help: main.cpp #include "tablec
