What it is
A 16-minute Android Dev Summit 2019 session by Nick Anthony and Tiem Song on moving Android projects from the old Support Library to AndroidX. It explains why to migrate soon, sets realistic expectations, and recommends a step-by-step process including Jetifier and Android Studio's refactor tool.

Migration to Android X would solve the issue. Here are the steps based on the recent talk at Android Dev Summit '19 [this video] : Make sure your minSdkVersion is at least 28. Enable Jetifier [LINK] by putting these lines to your gradle.properties file: android.useAndroidX=true android.enableJetifier=true Check whether your dependencies of third-party libraries you use are up-to-date. Use Android Studio tool for migrating by clicking on Refactor - Migrate to Android X... This way, you may avoid a lot of headache by following the first 3 steps right before using that tool.

I got to know about AndroidX from this Android Dev Summit video [this video] . The summarization is - No more support library: The android support library will be never maintained by Google under the support library namespace. So if you want to find fixes of a bug in support library you must have to migrate your project in AndroidX Better package management: For standardized and independent versioning.Because previous support library versioning was too confusing. It will release you the pain of “All com.android.support libraries must use the exact same version specification” message. Other Good libraries have migrated to AndroidX : Google play services, Firebase, Mockito 2, etc are migrated to An

Not migrating to Androidx will be delimiting to you in the future. If you are sure that your application will not use new APIs or Libraries in the future, then feel free to stick with the Android nomenclature. But if you are not certain, then going through the painful process is worth it. There are documentations that help you to perform this HUGE migration, basically by using incremental approach. Feel free to refer to this document and follow it religiously, by performing small increements. 28.0.0 was the last version of the original support libraries and these are no longer maintained. All functionality which was present in the support libraries is now a part of the AndroidX namespace and Google recommends that you move to AndroidX. In Android Studio 3.2 and higher you can migrate by doing a Refactor->Migrate to AndroidX However note that there may be some changes that you may have to do manually if you've specialized your configuration.
