Reading StarCloud’s Whitepaper So You Don’t Have To
Why Hacker News recommends it
HN commenters cite it as a visual, accessible debunking of space data center hype, showing the economics and heat rejection problems persist even under optimistic assumptions.

What it is
Brian McManus of Real Engineering walks through StarCloud's whitepaper on orbital data centers, examining the thermodynamics, radiator sizing, power, and cost assumptions behind putting AI compute in space. It is a 21-minute animated explainer sponsored by IEEE Spectrum, which published a related article on heat rejection.

> Are there any reasonable analyses of the practicality of data centers in space? This video points out that even if you take the most unrealistically optimistic value of every variable, it still doesn't make sense: "The Space Data Centers Situation is Insane" [this video]

you're correct. this video was a pretty good visual exploration of some of it: [this video] my personal understanding is that in-orbit compute is perfectly practical up to some obvious limits like the ones you describe. a few reasonably sized clusters up there (tens of kilowatts) doing high priority processing jobs paid by the flop is a great idea. localized compute on existing satellites already does some of this but some earth observation company being able to rapidly scale up image processing for an hour is a great option to have. the really big stuff is just a fantasy.

"You can play around with the cost sliders to estimate the economics, but even being quite optimistic, space data centers cost ~2-3x of their terrestrial counterparts." [LINK] The idea is marketing for the stock price and enterprise value. If SpaceX does do it, it'll be analogous to Tesla's "Supervised Full Self Driving." "We run a Kubernetes cluster with some models on the satellites." Starcloud seems like a whole lot of hand waving and BS. This is a good video that goes over their problems: [this video]
