What it is
A 12-minute screen-recorded tutorial from 2012 showing how to use GParted to extend the primary partition of a virtual disk so an Ubuntu Desktop VirtualBox guest can use space added by resizing the virtual hard drive. It is a companion to the same channel's video on resizing a hard drive in VirtualBox.

Generally yes . You can resize partitions using one of applications for manipulating disk partition tables. Most known such application is gparted [LINK] . There is plenty of text and video tutorials, how to use gparted. For example this [this video] or this [LINK] . However there are 2 important things you should be aware of. Backup your data before resizing partitions. It might be more complicated to resize partitions if you have them encrypted (using cryptsetup [LINK] ). In that case start with reading that [LINK] page.

Okay so the solution for me was to use gparted, that allows you to move and resize partitions. A nice tutorial of how to do it can be found here: [this video]

It is the last sentence of the help - if you would like to manage your partitions however, you will have to mount it live and do it from your live medium (flash disk e.g.). You can check youtube for video tutorials of: How to extend volumes (like here [this video] ) or you can create a new question thread (in case you are unable to find existing one).

Well, you can fix it, or you can backup your things and reinstall. Honestly, backing up /home and reinstalling would make life and things more easier for you. If you want to fix it, download and create a bootable usb stick or cd/dvd-rom with gpartd [LINK] . Then expand the file system. Also check this video [this video] on how to use gpartd.

As of 2019, I was having some issues trying to resize a Ubuntu 18.04 V.M. running on Hyper-V. Installing gparted: sudo apt install gparted , running it: sudo gparted and going through the resizing process on the application's GUI solved my problem. gparted GUI aid: [this video] EDIT : Apparently, this still works as far as Jan/2021 as this answer got upvotes recently.

I wanted to shrink more my Windows partition into at least 100 GB more and add that to the current 107.42 GB unallocated space. My main goal is to extend /dev/sda8 (main Ubuntu partition) to use the unallocated space. I watched this video Extend Ubuntu Disk Volume with GParted after Resizing Hard Drive [this video] , but I can't move/resize /dev/sda8 to the left side of unalloc or move unalloc to the right side of /dev/sda8 . How can I get pass through the left of ext4, grub2core, and linux-swap? Info and questions from my screenshot: /dev/sda4 is my Windows partition. /dev/sda8 is my main Ubuntu partition. Where is my extended here? [LINK]
