Why Electrical Engineering Stack Exchange recommends it

Electronics Stack Exchange answerers point people to it as a reference for proper hand-soldering technique, such as matching tip size to pad size and soldering plated through-hole boards.

What it is

Part 2 of Dave Jones's EEVblog beginner soldering tutorial, a 34-minute hands-on demo of hand-soldering technique following Part 1, which covered the tools. He shows how to solder through-hole joints, including tip size, heat transfer and joint quality.

If it doesn't "stick", the best thing to do is use a Flux Pen. These are less than £2 on eBay ( [LINK] ). These are designed to clean the joint and remove all the oxidastion on the metal parts or legs. You almost "draw" with the flux pen over what you want to clean up. It will leave a horrible looking mess, but the solder will then work. The reason solder doesn't stick is because the metal becomes oxodised after a while so the solder won't "stick", as it has no bare metal to stick to! Also, try using a lower temperature on your soldering iron. It may be too hot to work with. If you don't have a temperature controlled one then bin it, and get one as the non-temperature controlled ones are so

PTH (plated through-hole) boards like this one are more difficult (than single-sided boards) to work with and not recommended for a beginner, although when properly used they do provide a higher-quality result. Proper soldering technique for PTH boards is shown for example in [this video]

Hakko recommends [LINK] the tip to be the same size as the pad. This guy [LINK] says it should be 60 % of the pad size. Dave of EEVblog seems to be using [this video] the tip roughly the same size as the pad. From the general physics logic, I would recommend having as wide tip as possible, while not touching the neighbouring components. It will store as much heat as possible while also transferring it as quickly as possible to the components. So we need to know the dimensions of what you are likely to solder. My perf boards have the pad diameter of 2 mm. The Arduino mini pro clone has the pad diameter around 1.4 mm (the pad is almost vanishing there, it's just a thin ring around the hole). The GY
