[Screencast] Artifactory 4.0 Jenkins Integration
Why Stack Overflow recommends it
Stack Overflow users link it when asked how to attach build metadata and properties to artifacts and deploy or promote them from Jenkins to Artifactory instead of encoding that data in file names.
Recommended by 2 people across 2 different months, 2015 to 2017.
What it is
A 16-minute JFrog screencast showing how to publish Maven builds from Jenkins into Artifactory 4.0 using the Jenkins Artifactory Plugin. It covers captured build info, the build browser, build diffing, license management, build-related properties and property search, and promotion.

Just use the Jenkins Artifactory Plugin [LINK] or the Maven Artifactory Plugin [LINK] . Both generate a BuildInfo metadata [LINK] that include the information you need and much, much more. All this information is attached to the artifacts and make the artifacts traceble without need to embed this info in the filenames or into the archives themselves. Please take some time to watch this screencast [this video] . It explains in detail what you can get and why it's important.

I can see where the idea of adding more metadata to the file names come. Usually, we don't have any other place to add this kind of information, except of the name. But with a proper artifact repository manager (as Artifactory), you don't need it anymore. You can attach any metadata to the artifacts in the repository manager, and then manipulate (e.g. promote) the artifacts based on those properties. Here's a screencast [this video] showing what it takes to add this kind of metadata to the artifacts, and how to promote artifacts based on it.

I am researching the exact same thing right now and I think I've found the answer. Unfortunately I am not able to speak from experience yet, because I will start using Artifactory in a month or so. Actual answer: I think you need to use Properties [LINK] functionality of Artifactory. There are two YouTube videos directly from JFrog regarding properties: Artifactory 3.X - Using property-sets to tag and search for artifacts in Artifactory [LINK] (yes, I know it's from 2009) Artifactory 4.0 Jenkins Integration [this video] - the segments: 08:10 - Artifactory Build Info JSON 10:01 - Build Related Properties 10:36 - Properties Search

Use artifacts as mentioned by Paul Back [LINK] , or a 3rd party artifactory server as in video [this video] This is always tricky and error-prone. Why not spin up a fresh server with new release ( humanly verified once )
