What it is
A Google Tech Talk from January 2007 in which Neal Gafter presents the proposal to add closures to the Java language. He covers the language extension, its design rationale, and how it would affect APIs built on anonymous classes, such as concurrency and callbacks, as well as programmer-defined control constructs.

Here is Neal Gafter's blog [LINK] one of the pioneers introducing closures in Java. His post on closures from January 28, 2007 is named A Definition of Closures [LINK] On his blog there is lots of information to get you started as well as videos. An here is an excellent Google talk - Advanced Topics In Programming Languages - Closures For Java [this video] with Neal Gafter, as well.

This is probably not quite what you are looking for but there is an excellent talk about closures for Java (how they should/could be implemented) that also goes into some examples on where you would want to use them [this video]

You need to understand that java doesn't support static local variables unlike C/C++. But in some cases Closures may help you for your goal. Try these some sources for Closures - GoogleTechTalkByNeal Gafter [this video] , AnotherBog [this video] , java.dzone.com [LINK]

What's wrong with existing inner class, why inner class can't be used for representing closure? Currently I will post here some resources to start with . First of, below is listed great overview what is closure is. It is language agnostic. I recommend to read it Closure [LINK] ADDED A BIT LATER [January 2007] A Definition of Closures [LINK] END [December 2011] State of the Lambda [LINK] [October, 2007] Advanced Topics In Programming Languages: Closures For Java [this video] [January 4, 2011] JSR 292 goodness: Lambda to SAM type conversion using invokedynamic [LINK]

@Voo If you starting to read the forums you will see that there are many people that said that it is _fundemantal_ change in the language and not syntactical sugar as you and I see it. Look at [this video] the link above, for example.
