Why Engineering Stack Exchange recommends it

Engineering Stack Exchange users link it as a clear visual of how a barrel-cam indexer produces indexed motion with dwell periods, in answers about gearboxes, stepped rotation and cam design.

What it is

A 1m20s product clip from Motion Index Drives showing barrel-cam rotary indexers, where a continuously turning cam drives a table through stepped, intermittent rotation. It demonstrates the mechanism and the company's fixed and flexible standard indexer lines.

The best I can think of is a barrel-cam indexer mechanism. [LINK] Figure 1. Image source: nolte-nc-kurventechnik [LINK] . See the Motion index drive [this video] on YouTube for a better view with fewer cam followers. The animation in Figure 1 shows a helical barrel cam but there are many other options. For industrial indexers there is often a period of "dwell" put into the motion so that with continuous rotation of the barrel there is intermittent indexing of the table. In your case you would put a portion of reverse motion rather than dwell. I know this would be relatively easy with a four-way indexer which, in your application, would give 90° forward, 45° back. This might be even better for the

Your question may be closed due to being rather vague and open-ended. Your goal can be accomplished with stepper motors and appropriate controllers, with servo motors and controllers, and is also likely with a strictly mechanical approach. Consider to edit your question to reflect a more detailed methodology. If you do not require automation, indexing mechanisms are common. I did a quick search for indexers but found the best results on Thingiverse, an online repository for 3D printed models. One of the models I found was somewhat more complex than expected, a scroll cam indexer. The YouTube has a one minute video [this video] of one such device, which rotates 60° for each turn of the driving sha

I'm looking for a book/notes about designing a rotary indexer like in this video (the first system until 34 sec): [this video] For example, I need table= top plate with 5 stations/stops. The rotating cam driving angle is 240 deg, and in the rest 120 deg the table isn't turning.
