Sunlight: Optimize Health and Immunity (Light Therapy and Melatonin)
Why Hacker News recommends it
HN cites it as an accessible physician-led review supporting claims about infrared light, mitochondria and morning sun.
What it is
Dr. Roger Seheult of MedCram reviews the benefits of sunlight beyond vitamin D, covering the solar spectrum, circadian rhythm, melatonin and infrared light. The lecture runs nearly two hours with timestamps.

Try infrared light therapy. (sun, infrared heater or specialized light) We recently found out that all of our mitochondria in our cells need infrared light to get rid of oxidative stress. Our modern environment is devoid of infrared light: create all sort of inflammation and autoimmune diseases. I had similar symptoms(peripheral neuropathy, headache), heal myself and my eczema that I had every winter in the last 23 years with a few minutes per day in front of a infrared space heater.e It’s this doctor that gave me the idea to try it out. [this video] I also know someone who was dying of IBS in the hospital, at some point he say f*ck it if I am going to die it will be under the sun. He checked out

Please, please, if you have IBS, Crohn or other immune disease try infrared light or better the sun. Especially if you spend a lot of time indoor (engineer) if you live in the north or if your condition get worse in the winter. I know someone who save his life that way. To me it clear up my winter eczema. We need infrared to get rid of inflammation. It’s scientifically proven, free, yet most people are not aware of it. [this video]

Our body NEED infrared light. (real doctor research with scientific evidence) An interesting recent discovery is that our body need infrared radiation to function properly, not just UV light/vitamin D. I think that people living in the northern climate discovered/felt that it was better to be exposed to the radian heat of the fire in the winter. We recently (50-100) years have been getting rid of fireplaces and replaced with forced air and baseboard heater that probably generated a lot of health problem. A month ago I discovered this information, bought an small infrared heated and healed in 10 days the winter eczema I have been fighting for 25 years. source: [this video] I hope this help somebod

We also need infrared light to be healthy, led lights have none. Recent research have shown that infrared light is needed for our mitochondria to work properly. I have cured my 20 year winter eczema in two weeks with a cheap infrared heater. [this video]

The article makes no mention of Photobiomodulation (and there’s no mention in these comments at the time of writing). And that's odd. Because that's the HUGE idea here. Yes, there are concerns about the harms associated with the UV end of the spectrum. But there are also the massive benefits from the Near Infrared (NIR) end. Certain NIR wavelengths, around 810nm to 850nm, penetrate up to 5cm into the body and have a dramatically positive effect on mitochondria, creating the most powerful sub-cellular antioxidant (melatonin) to manage Oxidative Stress. This is well-established science now. Indeed, the exact mechanism is known (cytochrome c oxidase, etc). It turns out that for good health it h

There's an interesting theory about mitochondria and melatonin secretion caused by near-infrared light that may be causing the different health outcomes, which historically are correlated very strongly to Vitamin D serum levels (where causation has yet to be shown). Here's a link for a presentation and a proposed mechanism of action around near-IR light by one of the best sources of medical science info on the internet: [this video]

It's surprising this article doesn't significantly mention sunlight's non-UV components, like infrared light. There appears to be increasing evidence to support its ability to influence various processes within the body to positive effect.
