Why Blender Stack Exchange recommends it

Blender Stack Exchange answerers point people to it when asking how to transfer high poly surface detail onto a low poly model via normal map baking.

Recommended by 4 people across 4 different months, 2018 to 2020.

What it is

A short tutorial, part 5 of Jayanam's high poly to low poly series, showing how to bake a normal map from a high poly mesh onto a low poly mesh using Blender Cycles. It is a screen-recorded walkthrough made for Blender 2.7x.

I would suggest baking the high poly mesh to a normal map in Cycles and plugging the generated image into the material for the low poly box using the node editor. There are many great tutorials on this workflow, including: [this video] . It produces consistent results. You may want to triangulate the low poly mesh first if you are going to export it to a game engine such as Unity, as they may calculate triangles differently.

I am not too sure about Unity, but in blender the usual way to go from highpoly models to lowpoly models is to create a normal map from the highpoly and apply it to the lowpoly. To do this see here: [this video] Hope it helps :)

Ask my friends, they say that this works for 2.79 and 2.8, which helps you High poly to Low poly workflow : Blender Cycles Baking 5 [this video]

It's absolutely possible - however it might be too much to write as an answer. I recommend watching some tutorial videos on the process such as this one - [this video] - and for more detail on the process of normal map baking try this - [LINK] Unfortunately the first one is for pre-2.8, but the process is mostly the same. Try finding one that has what you need but is more recent.

Using Blender 2.79 I am attempting to create a ferret to animate. The body has been created in two versions. Both low poly and high ply objects which are located in the same space. The low poly has been UV unwrapped. I was trying to follow [this video] to bake a normal map of the high poly object to apply to the low poly version. I selected the high poly and low poly objects, set up the bake controls as instructed and hit BAKE. This came back with an error saying NO VALID SELECTED OBJECTS. I went back and fiddled with various controls for a while with the same results before giving up for the night and closed Blender without saving. When I opened it today to try again I found the hi poly version
