Why Hacker News recommends it

HN brings it up as a sardonic example of industry spokespeople not trusting their own safety claims, not as a recommendation.

There's a video where a Monsanto lobbyist spouts circular talking-points about how glyphosate was safe to drink, offered either Round Up or glyphosate and refused to drink it. [this video] It's irrelevant if glyphosate alone is cancerous or not, because 99.9999% of deployment is via sprays like Round Up. The combined product , in both animal and human models, need thorough mutagenic research. It's just news shows don't want to give Monsanto free advertising or face libel laws, so they conflate the generic compound with the product.

Remember when the Monsanto lobbyist/scientist said that their glyphosate pesticide Roundup is so safe you can drink it? To his surprise, he was offered a glass of it, and refused it, saying "I'm not stupid", and "I'm not an idiot", while insisting it's harmless to humans: [this video] How about we release this waste water in Japan's rivers, upstream of their purification plants, if it's so safe. Surely it will be thoroughly diluted by the time it ends in the tap water, below the radioactivity of a banana.

This comment reminds of when Patrick Moore defended glyphosate and said you could drink a whole quart of it and it wouldn't hurt you - then when offered one by the reporter doing the interview danced around refusing to do it on the record. Good times. [this video]
