What it is
A 2015 screencast of a local GDG MN meetup talk by Dan Lew introducing Groovy, Gradle and the Android Gradle plugin. It covers what Groovy is, how it relates to Java, and how Gradle uses Groovy for build scripts. The speaker admits he is new to the topic and lists a few corrections in the description.

Since the question author didn't want to share his code for reading files. I'm gonna write about what I did. I put all the variants name in a file named "app/build_variants.txt", one line for each, something like this: flavor1 flavor2 flavor3 flavor4 flavor5 And in "app/build.gradle": //...other configs... android { productFlavors { new File('app/build_variants.txt').eachLine { "$it" { resValue "string", "build_variant_name", "$it" } } } } //...other configs This will have the same result as the following code: //...other configs... android { productFlavors { flavor1 { resValue "string", "build_variant_name", "flavor1" } flavor2 { resValue "string", "build_variant_name", "flavor2" } flavor3

I know I shouldn't just post a link as an answer, but there's really no better explanation than this: "An introduction to Groovy, Gradle and the Android plugin" by Daniel Lew [this video]

No problem! Also, I don't know if it was just a mistake on your part or you feel lost with Groovy and Gradle in general, but if it is the latter, I suggest you check this video: [this video] It explains what Groovy is, how it relates to Java, and how Gradle uses Groovy. It really helped me understand all of this.

In a build.gradle, we have the android block. From my limited understanding of Android Gradle Plugin (and Groovy/ Kotlin), this is a method/ (or function?) called android which accepts 1 argument, a closure. android { compileSdkVersion(AppConfig.compileSdkVersion) buildToolsVersion(AppConfig.buildToolsVersion) } I was not able to find any documentation about android , both on the Google Developer website and Gradle.org. It doesn't help that the function has the same name as the whole operating system. Any documentation about Android Gradle plugin would be helpful, as it seems like information about it is pepperred all over Android docs. So far, I can search what each property means (e.g. app
