Content Aware Image Resizing
Why Stack Overflow recommends it
Stack Overflow users link it as the canonical visual example of content-aware resizing when answering or asking about seam carving, liquid rescaling and image retargeting.

What it is
A short 2007 demo of seam carving, the content-aware image resizing technique from Avidan and Shamir's SIGGRAPH paper. It shows images being shrunk or stretched while objects of interest stay intact. The video is uploaded by BotJunkie and points to the research group's site.

ImageMagick [LINK] all the way. It's a codebase with nearly every image-related operation you could possibly want to do, implemented fairly efficiently in C. This includes various types of resizing, both interpolated (bilinear, trilinear, adaptive, etc.), and not (just decimating (sampling) or replicating pixels. There are a ton of APIs (language bindings) that you can use in your applications, including MagickNet [LINK] . Also, not sure if it's at all relevant to what you're trying to do, but I thought this was a pretty darn cool SIGGRAPH paper, so here goes: ImageMagick also supports what they call "liquid rescaling", or seam carving, a technique shown in this cool demo here [this video] , and

One technique to segment text from the background is the Stroke Width Transform. You'll find several posts here on Stack Overflow about it, including this one: Stroke Width Transform (SWT) implementation (Java, C#...) [LINK] If the text shown in the Wikipedia page is representative of written Oriya, then I'm confident that the SWT (or your customized version of it) will perform well. You may still have to do some manual tweaking after you review an image, but an SWT-based method should do a lot of the work for you. Although the SWT may not identify every single stroke, it should give you a good estimate of the dimensions of the space occupied by strokes (and characters). The simplest method

Definitely take a look at image retargeting. The technique specifically focuses on ensuring that the entire scene is not compromised while resizing the image. A good example is the Seam Carving approach - [this video] BTW @ParagS.Chandakkar pointed to a Google Scholar webpage, and Seam Carving is the first paper that appears! I wrote an implementation of Seam Carving in Java for a Coursera course I took on Algorithms. Check it out! [LINK]

I am looking for a open source project that does content-aware image resizing in any of the web back-end language (e.g. PHP, Ruby) By content-aware image resizing, I mean the one seen in Photoshop CS5, or [this video] Thanks.
