What it is
A short Blender 2.8 tutorial from New Media Supply on the free built-in Bool Tool add-on. It shows how to enable the add-on, set preferences, run boolean operations, snap the cursor to edges, faces or vertices, copy booleans, apply smooth shading, and use the shortcuts.

Its because how the mesh is shaped as it contains ngons so if you would add subsurf modifier it would create weird geometry [LINK] try creating a good mesh without tris and ngons just with quads. Here I've converted ngons to tris and quads by selecting all the ngons and Hit Ctrl+T in Edit Mode. Then ngons will be converted to tris and quads. [LINK] Then by bevel edges you can see that some of the shape remains same.. [LINK] So, the solution is to create a new mesh with good geometry just with quads if possible. and bevel all the edges that curve when subsurf modifier is used. If you can create the mesh its great. If not try using Booltool [this video] addon it would save lot of time in creating t

I used the Bolt Factory tutorial [LINK] and the Bool tool tutorial [this video] ad-dons Pick the object you want to use as a "drill bit" (bolt with threads) Pick the item you want to drill/place the hole in (box or object) and choose Difference Note: You could also use Ctrl + Shift + - (this keyboard combination does bool difference) [LINK] Make tolerances for bolt to screw into object Note: you may want to 3D print the bolt horizontal for strength 3D print the bolt horizontal for strength [LINK]

If you install the built-in Bool tool addon (Edit > Preferences > Addons and search for 'Bool') you can then use CTRL + Numpad keys to automatically add a boolean modifier and the modifier object's viewport mode will be changed to 'Bounds' at the same time which makes things much clearer. There's a video here [this video] which shows how to install and use it. That's for Blender 2.8 but it works the same way in 2.9 and 3.0.
