Are you referring to this tut [this video] ? It didn't work for me too, but if I set Plane along X axis with Rotation applied Ctrl + A ... it works for me. [LINK]

Simple Deform modifier does not work on X and Y. I'm not sure but this thread [LINK] and this thread [LINK] don't quite explain this phenomenon. I remember I did this video [this video] tutorial before and back then the Simple Deform used to work. But now in Blender 4.0 it seems broken? [LINK] Now only Z can be deformed. I have enough subdivisions. What is going on? [LINK] I also tried specifying a curve in the Origin field but I don't think that's necessary in my case. When I add a Solidify modifier before the Simple Deform then it does other funny things.
