What it is

A short screen-recorded tutorial by quidsup showing how to manually upgrade the Linux kernel on Ubuntu 12.04 and Linux Mint by downloading mainline .deb packages from kernel.ubuntu.com and installing them with dpkg. It covers what kernel 3.4 adds, how to confirm the new kernel with uname -r, how to fall back through Grub, and how to stop the old kernel auto-updating.

While this is very true, the 3.4 kernel does offer improved hardware support if you are running recent CPUs and GPUs as noted at [LINK] Some people did have issues with the default kernel in Ubuntu 12.04 and the upgrade solved a lot of problems: see [this video] (The video title mentions kernel 3.5, but it is about 3.4.) I agree, however, there is no need to do a kernel update from the mainline unless you have a real pressing reason.
