Make sure it will not go beyond the 4 primary partitions ; if so then your PC will not boot up. You can make extra partition with GParted--up to four primary partitions, or up to three primary partitions plus an extended partition that acts as a contained for logical partitions. This way you can effectively have more than four partitions. Make sure you have sufficient space for Windows 8. Install Windows 8. Now you notice that only Windows 7 and 8 are listed in Windows's boot loader. You have 2 option to make it so you can select Ubuntu when booting your machine: Add Ubuntu in windows boot loader by using easyBCD [LINK] . Reinstall GRUB 2 by live CD. I have already installed Windows 7,Ubuntu 12.04 and Fedora 17 (triple boot) The easy way to do this: Make sure it will not go beyond the 4 primary partitions if it so then your PC will not boot up You can make extra partition by GParted tool but it will not more than 4 in case of primary partition while other extended partition is allowed After having the sufficient space for third Linux distribution, install it . Then, I re-install grub2 of Ubuntu Here is the video [this video] Now you are able to use all the three OS installed in your PC If the other distribution is not shown in grub2 menu then you can update Ubuntu grub2. No you would just have installed GRUB in the wrong place. You can follow the straight forward instructions on how to fix it here: [this video] The basic gist is that you load into the live disk and reinstall grub in the correct place from there.

If you have a USB drive that doesn't have any important data, I would recommend booting from an Ubuntu live system and reinstalling GRUB to your drive from there. Watch this video. [this video] to find out how to do that. It's a bit old but it is still for GRUB 2 so it should still work. I haven't tried it though, sorry.

I might install a 2nd linux system on my HD. I was told that I would have to reinstall grub to make the 2 system appear after I turn on my laptop. I also have widows installed...so it might get a bit messy. I have just watched this video: [this video] And it is really informative, but I need a proper walkthrough to understand how this grub thingy works. Can anyone redirect me to a video or webpage where someone explains this grub installation in case of secondary linux OS in details?

Manager Partitions Install GParted if necessary by running sudo apt-get install gparted ; Down-size your Ubuntu partition to create some free space; Create a new partition and format it as NTFS; Install Windows [LINK] from a Recovery Disk [LINK] Some computer manufacturers that pre-install Windows provide a Windows recovery/re-installation CD or DVD with the computer. However, many companies no longer ship a physical disc but instead create a hidden partition on the hard drive in which the recovery-disk information is stored. A utility is then usually provided which allows the user to burn a recovery/re-installation CD or DVD from it. If you are buying a new computer and intend on dual-booti

I want to install Ubuntu alongside Windows, with it being on an external hard drive. My windows installation is on an internal SSD. I've gone through the installation but I get this message toward the end of the installation when setting the boot device as the SSD or the EUFI petition Executing 'grub-install /dev/sda' failed. This is a fatal error. I am able to 'install' it fully when I set the boot device as the External hard drive, but it does not come in the boot devices in the bios. I know I am able boot from USB, as I did the installation from a live USB. I've also tried installing grub via terminal, using this video [this video] , but still no luck. Any suggestions?
