Why Blender Stack Exchange recommends it

Blender Stack Exchange commenters link it when people ask how to morph or blend between two different meshes using shape keys.

Recommended by 3 people across 3 different months, 2018 to 2021.

What it is

A short screencast tutorial showing how to morph one 3D object into another in Blender. It demonstrates two methods: a very easy one and a second that gives more control. It is presented by the OneMinute VideoTutorials channel.

It won't work even if you get the vertex count to match. The vertex order, placement and topology is different so your shape key would be just random garble. Join as shapes is meant to transfer keys between identical base meshes. Look into using Shrinkwrap modifier on the empty mesh to conform to other mesh with each shapekey, then apply the shrinkwrap modifier to shapekey. [this video]

If you are modelling with any kind of more exotic object, like point clouds or whatever. This would be the solution: [this video]

[this video] try to look at this quick tutorial from 1:30, it is for older version but it still works same way, You just use shape keys to transfor object from frog to bear and you can stop at 0.2 0.4 0.6 and 0.8 to get those 4 morphing animals (it may not look perfect if your animals are very different, also both animals need same number of vertices)
