Blender SoftBody Tutorial - Introduction
Why Blender Stack Exchange recommends it
Blender Stack Exchange answerers point people to it for a quick visual explanation of the soft body settings, such as bending, push and stiff quads, when meshes collapse or crumple.

What it is
A short 2011 tutorial by Daniel Kreuter that introduces Blender's soft body physics and walks through its main settings. It is one of a series of quick simulation tutorials covering smoke, fluid, cloth and more.

You could also use the Bending and Push values in the Physics > Softbody > Softbody Edges panel . Probably slower and unnecessary in this case, but I thought I would mention it. Here is a nice video with examples of the settings [this video] . EDIT: in my experience also enabling "stiff quads" helps keep things in shape as well.

Probably the first thing people find when they enable soft body is that it all collapses in on itself. You need to stiffen it up a bit to have it maintain it's structure. The first thing I would do is enable Stiff Quads and turn up Bending to 3, damp to 20 (under soft body edges) and damping to 12 (under soft body goal). You will need to experiment more to get it right but that should get you closer. You might find this video [this video] helpful in explaining some of the options.

In my car game I would like to make the metal bend, when it hits a wall. I think of soft body or cloth simulation. How can I achieve that the metal stays solid, but deforms when it hits and keeps this form, like metal? But what I did results in the material being stuck in the obstacle. Thanks :) This are the settings: Plastic is high, so it keeps the deformation Pull and push are low, because they must stretch and be pushed together. I looked at the tutorial of [this video]
