Why Blender Stack Exchange recommends it

Blender Stack Exchange users link it as the reference sculpting-detail tutorial, both as a recommendation for normal-map style detail and as the source people follow when they get stuck on the anvil exercise.

What it is

A 37-minute intermediate Blender tutorial by Andrew Price (Blender Guru) on adding fine surface detail such as bumps, scratches and wear to a model, using an anvil as the worked example. It covers displacement and sculpt mode with Dyntopo and symmetry, and comes with a starting blend file and reference photos.

I would use a normal map. You might check out this [this video] great video by blenderguru. It's a bit old, but the technique is the same.

I'm following an Andrew Price sculpting tutorial [this video] and at around 26:00min he uses the smooth brush to smooth out the horn of the anvil. When I try to do this, I get some artifacts instead of smoothed out geometry. Any reason to why this is happening? [LINK] [LINK] [LINK] [LINK] I have tried retopologizing my mesh (which I suspect consists mainly out of triangles (dyntopo)) with ctrl+f > tris to quads, but when I tried the smoothing brush on this model I got the same result...idk Does anyone know a solution to this? Thanks in advance.

hi so what i did as in this tutorial was to add a displacement modifier to have a slightly uneven surface and then go to the sculpt mode to add details. first thing is that after I supplied the displacement modifier it seems still have some kind of pixel like look...those squares... instead in the tutorial it looks so smooth..(i did supply the subdivision(2 as in the tutorial) before the displacement. second question is mine seems part of those lines are under the surface so that I couldn't sculpt wherever i'd like to which doesn't seem like a problem in the tutorial. ps the tutorial here [this video] my file [LINK] thank you for your time!! I'm new to Blender and I'm following Blender Guru's Anvil tutorial. In the video Blender Intermediate Tutorial - How to Sculpt Details [this video] , when Andrew is sculpting, he uses Dyntopo and Symmetry and it works seamlessly. When I use it, I can see Dyntopo is being applied on the other side of the axis, but not in the same way. [LINK] Right side is where I sculpted, left side is the mirrored side. When I go into Edit mode, I can confirm Dyntopo is being applied on both sides. Here are the settings I'm using: [LINK] I'm using Blender 3.5 on MacOS Ventura 13.4 by the way. The file: [LINK]
