Why Blender Stack Exchange recommends it

Blender Stack Exchange users link it when someone asks how to generate a large city or import real map data without modeling every building by hand.

Recommended by 2 people across 4 different months, 2014 to 2022.

What it is

A short Blender tutorial by Gleb Alexandrov (Creative Shrimp) showing how to build a large city scene using the Open Street Map add-on for layout, particle-based dupli groups and procedural texturing, then cover it in fog. It is a fast-paced, screen-recorded walkthrough.

You could try to export from OpenStreetMap [LINK] How to model effectively using exact measurements? [LINK] It depends on what you want to achieve (should be another question) you could use layers and groups. For buildings in the background adding textures should be sufficient for close up I would refine the geometry and add more materials. Related: Trying to create a script that makes roofs on selected boxes [LINK] Imported .osm after extrusion (Note that exporting a whole city leads to 2GB files which can't be loaded in Blender) For some cities 360° images are available from Google street view / maps view which help to elaborate on building details and estimate their age. This one is inspiring on how to import cities: [this video] the area you're trying to cover is way too large to be more than cubes with roofs (IMHO).

In addition to the other great answers here, I would add Gleb Alexandrov [LINK] 's tutorial video: How to Create a City, Covered With Fog [this video] . Regardless of whether you opt to add the fog, this is a very helpful (and quick) tutorial for creating cities. He uses the Open Street Map add-on [LINK] to generate the layout, so the angles of the buildings look very natural because they are based on real cities. And his texturing approach is brilliant. A search on Pixabay for city skyline night [LINK] should provide some usable results for anyone looking to do this. If this needs to be animated in such a way that a simple image backdrop will not suffice, but actual modeling of a city is required, check out Gleb Alexandrov's tutorial How to Create a City, Covered with Fog [this video] .

I've found this blender tutorial : How to Create a City Covered with Fog [this video] and I've tried to do it. And then I've chosen the map of the city where I live and I have selected a small area, but when I have imported it in blender I have seen that something hasn't worked correctly. Please check the screenshots attached to understand better where could be the problem, thanks.

I'm following this Gleb Alexandrov tutorial : Blender tutorial: How to Create a City, Covered with Fog [this video] Go to minute 4:52,under the particle system/render tab ,you will see that he chosen as Dupli Group "Group.001" . Where/when he took/created this label ? I don't have it on my side. He also has 2 others label : g_antenna and group . I imagine that g_antenna is related to the mesh of the antenna that he got somewhere, but I'm not able to understand where, and the other label, that's group,I don't know what is this. I add two screens. The first is what I see on my side and the other one is what I see on the particle system/render tab of the Gleb Tutorial. 1) [LINK] 2) [LINK]

Hello to everyone (specially to Mzidare :D), I found this blender tutorial How to Create a City Covered with Fog [this video] and I tried to do it. The problem I have is that I can extrude a single building vertices/faces correctly but not all vertices/faces of all the building at one time by pressing A. If I do it,the extruded part is shown above the old one. I switched the mode selection to face and also to vertex . But it didn't work. The author of the tutorial, Gleb Alexandrov ,did not explain it very well, because he talks very fast. At the beginning of the stage 2,he says : "hit Ctrl + A " ; instead, I imagine that's "press A to select everything" and then he says "press E to extrude". And f
