What it is
A 30-minute Blender 2.83 tutorial by David of Lightning Boy Studio on building 3D trees in the style of Studio Ghibli films. It uses toon shading, custom normals transferred onto instanced foliage particles, and a shader setup, with a free scene file offered.

Transfer Normals on Instanced Particles Theory: Currently I don't think there's an easy way to pick the value of the shaded surface of another mesh and transfer to the built in hair strand, but we can copy it's normals orientation and use the same material and transfer them to another object. We basically just neet to create a separate Object that will work as a particle system, but it's actually a mesh, so we can tweak it's shading. If you want to know more, there's a YT video about the same technique used for making NPR trees foliage by David from Lightning Boy Studio: [this video] Practice: Starting from a situation similar to this one: [LINK] You need to create a particle system using an Obje

I'm instancing 2 particle systems on one object. I'm also using the data transfer modifier to get custom normals on the same object. But to use that modifier I have to enable autosmooth. That's where the problem is, if I use autosmooth it will shade flat, but I need the custom normals to get the correct lighting/shading. Can you add a screenshot of your result? If I open your file the object (part of a Ghibli-style tree) looks like the one in the video ... [this video] ... I am not sure what's wrong.

@Blunder I added the screenshots. The problem is that his shading is smooth while mine is flat. It makes the shadows look unpleasant and blocky while his aren't. [this video] You can see that at this part of the video

I've been playing around while following a guide [this video] to make a material that makes use of the shader to rgb node, and somehow the lighting is now either completely black or washed out when I switch from shader preview to rendered view. I've replaced and fiddled with all the scene lights and world background to no avail. Is there any way to fix this? I am trying to follow this [this video] tutorial to create a Ghibli-style tree in Blender, but instead of creating the base object using particle systems, I wanted to do it all through geometry nodes instead to allow for a very streamlined method to create and randomize numerous trees in the future. I have been able to get to the step where he transfers the normals without issue. Then, I attempted to use a geo-nodes based method to transfer the normals from a base object so I didn't have to use modifiers. I have been able to get a pretty nice result: [LINK] [LINK] This method takes the normals from the base mesh (a sphere about the size of the tree) and inserts them into a named attribute blend n

I have the Node wrangler addon enabled, but when I use "shift + ctrl + left mouse", the node viewer not appear, but connects in a straight line, but by pressing "shift + ctrl + right mouse" the node mix appears.... I have searched all the sites with the same problem, but no one has written any solutions that ( [this video] ) I tried to make a tree based on this video, but I need a node viewer there, do I need to install an old version of the blender for this thing??? wt

I'm learning to make models. And I really like this shading style. I can understand the program at a basic level (at a level where I can do toon shading), but I don't know how to make the shadows edge on the model soft and look like they used a low-opacity paintbrush. Like this [LINK] [LINK] This is the model I have. I have tried making the bushes in this link [this video] . It make the shading close to what I want. But I don't understand how it happened.
